Why is the Kerrville Mountain Bike Festival sanctioning with USA Cycling? 

1. Insurance- We have researched all of the different companies and entities that offer insurance for mountain bike races and USA Cycling offers the best, most inclusive insurance for a bicycle race.  It is worth it to our team to have the most comprehensive product available for the race organization, volunteers, staff, athletes, land owner and sponsor and we are not willing to gamble and leave ourselves exposed. 
2. USA Cycling is the National Governing Body for the sport of cycling in the US and we want to support that. Think about the 2024 Olympic performances: Chole Dygart/Jennifer Valente/ Lily Williams/ Kristen Faulkner GOLD Team Pursuit, Kristen Faulkner GOLD Road Race, Jennifer Valente GOLD Womens Omnium, Perris Benga’s SILVER BMX Freestyle, Hailey Batty SILVER MTB XC, Chloe Dygart BRONZE Time Trial. Impressive!
3. Points are available at sanctioned races. Not a big deal for some, but a really big deal for others. 
4. The Kerrville Mountain Bike Festival offers points towards call up at the 2026 National Championships for all groups except Junior 15-16 and 17-18. They have a different set of qualifications since the fields are so large. Here is the 2025 FAQ

We thought that the TMBRA spring series was the state championship- we even got a jersey. 

Yes, the spring series was a TMBRA named Texas State Championship Series, however it was not USAC sanctioned. Thus, there was not a USAC sanctioned and nationally recognized State Championship in Texas for mountain biking. The Kerrville Mountain Bike Festival decided to be that race. There was not any other race in the fall that chose to join in a “series” sanctioned by USAC so this is a one day stand-alone State Championship. 

Will I be required to buy a USA Cycling license? 

Yes, and there are a couple of options for racing:

Annual License: Purchase directly from USA Cycling-

2025 USAC Annual License Fee: Junior $40 / Adult $110. USA Cycling is offering a promotional discount for first time ADULT memberships- use code INTROMEMB25 to get a $49 membership.

One Day Licenses: For those that don’t want to purchase a year long license but want to race, a one-day Beginner licenses for Cat 3 are $15 and a one-day Experienced license for Pro, Cat 1 and Cat 2 racers are $35. Both can be purchased through Bikereg during the registration process. There is no limit to how many times you can race on a one-day.

I’m not coming if I have to pay the added expense of a USAC license. 

We’re sorry you have chosen not to come. There are many expenses to race your bike from number plates, land access fee (Kerrville Schreiner Park is free to all non-racers and $10 to racers for the entire weekend), travel, accommodations, and equipment to insurance. We understand but we will not leave ourselves exposed to any liability and we are proud to know that USA Cycling has our back.
